The clan castle at Hunterston

October 2012:

Welcome to the website of Clan Hunter New Zealand.

The Clan has its headquarters at Hunterston Castle, near West Kilbride in Ayrshire, Scotland, which has been the seat of the Hunter Clan since 1107. Madam Pauline Hunter of Hunterston is 30th Laird.

The New Zealand Branch of the Clan was formed about ten years ago, Judge Richard Kearney was appointed the first Clan Officer in New Zealand and after his death Madam Pauline asked me if I would take over the position.

General Sir Aylmer Hunter-Weston, the 27th Laird, who died without any heirs, was my great uncle. My grand father Reginal who emigrated to New Zealand, was Alymer's younger brother. Neither he nor my father wished, on Alymers death, to go back to Hunterston when Alymer died, so his niece Eleonora Cochran Patrick inherited the title.

Our Branch has about 140 members scattered through out New Zealand and is open to any body with or connected with the name of Hunter . For further information contact the Clan Officer.

It is now over two years since this first devistating earthquake in Christchurch. We are still getting aftershocks, although not as frequently and they are not as strong, although we did have a 4.3 on September 21st.
Buildings are still being pulled down in the Central City and there are large areas of bare ground, where buildings have been everywhere. It is quite spooky.
There are signs of the rebuild starting to happen, however it is not expected to get into top gear until next year.

Recently has been a gathering held at Hunterston, on July 20-22, where Clan Members from several countries attended.
This was a very sucessful Gathering with a trip to the Island of Arran on the Monday following.
Two Clan Members from New Zealand attended, Jenny Price from Hawkes Bay and Stephanie Hunter from North Canterbury.

I am always open to any suggestions, so if you have ideas or suggestions, please get in touch with me.
