The clan marching at the Homecoming in Edinburgh

:

general description - aims - joining details - MORE SHORTLY

The Clan Hunter Association was formed in Scotland in 1970 to bring together the many branches of the family which had become dispersed throughout the English speaking world. The aims of the clan are to satisfy a growing interest in the origin of the family, and to provide a medium for social contact.

Clan Hunter is privileged to have the original family castle in Scotland in an excellent state of preservation. The Clan lands have been in the possession of the Hunters of Hunterston since the eleventh century and a extensive collection of family papers still exist, the oldest document dating back to 1374.

The castle is situated in Ayrshire in Scotland on the coast of the Firth of Clyde between West Kilbride and Largs.

The New Zealand Branch of Clan Hunter, was formed in June 1997. Judge Richard Kearney, of Mt Maunganui was appointed Clan Officer, by The Clan Chief and 30th Laird, Madam Pauline Hunter of Hunterston. Richard and his wife Betty did sterling work in getting the Clan up and running it. Unfortunately Richard died suddenly in March 2005.

In September 2008 Madam Pauline approached Hugh Hunter-Weston, a direct descendant of the Hunters of Hunterston, to ask if he would consider the post of Clan Officer in New Zealand, which he accepted.

Clan Membership is open to persons of the surname Hunter and also those with Hunter ancestry who do not have the same surname.
There are at present about 150 members in New Zealand.
For further information, contact the Clan Officer.
