The clan castle at Hunterston

March 2011:

Welcome to the New Zealand branch of Clan Hunter.

news update

As you all will know Christchurch was hit by a devastating earthquake last Tuesday the 22nd of February.

Gill and I, and I am sure all Clan Members, send our best wishes to fellow Members who have had their lives disrupted by the quake and hope you will be able to get your lives back on track as quickly as possible.

Any members who have lost or who have family members missing, our thoughts are with you at this terrible time.

For those of you outside of Christchurch, the pictures on TV and in the paper are showing only a small portion of the devastation. There are areas in the Eastern, Hillside (Sumner and Redcliff areas) and Seaside Suburbs that have not been shown and which are far worse than the September Quake.

It is going to be years or decades before things get back to normal.

Gill and I were in TeAnau when we received news of the quake. We returned to find tiles off the roof, cracks in the interior walls and ceilings and quite major damage to the landscaping. All pictures, bookcases and anything moveable were on the floor and broken.

However the house is liveable, to date we have no water or sewage and until we get them reinstated are staying with our son, Pip, at Hawarden in North Canterbury.

Jeff Hunter has decided that it will be best if the Picnic at Lake Rotoiti is postponed in the meantime. We will let you know when we can reschedule it.

I have copied below part of a message from our Clan Chief Madam Pauline.

In the meantime, to those affected, our thoughts are with you.

Hugh Hunter-Weston
Clan Officer

Madam Pauline Hunter of Hunterston,
Praefectus Venatorus Regis
Clan Chief and 30th Laird
